Diabetes can affect your eyes by causing problems in the retina with microvascular abnormalities. This causes small blood vessels to develop microaneurysms and leak blood. After new blood vessels grow, they are porous which causes them to leak.

These leaks can cause irreversible damage to the retina and blindness. Even patients with controlled diabetes are still able to develop diabetic retinopathy. This is the reason we highly recommend patients to get a yearly diabetic eye exam, which includes retinal photography.

Diabetes can make people more likely to get bacterial infections such as pink eye and styes. This is due to the diabetes affecting the autoimmune system and lowering the resistance to infection.

Others may experience more problematic eye conditions such as diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic Retinopathy is considered the leading cause of blindness. It mainly affects those above the age of 65. This eye disease can be managed by viewing the retina with instruments which magnify the eye structure. Having early management and detection of Diabetic Retinopathy through a yearly comprehensive eye exam is important. This will ensure that you are getting the correct treatment and protection against progression of this disease.

At Karns Vision Center, we are equipped with the latest technology to ensure that each diabetic eye exam is thorough and precise.
